LINING THE POND - 1997
SECURING THE EDGES

Bill researched pond liners and decided on a plastic composition liner - a three layered high-tech composite which is used for ponds and to cap landfills. Rubber liners are preferable because they are more flexible (heavy plastic is quite stiff) and less affected by uv rays from the sun. But the plastic liner is quite a bit less expensive and will probably last as long as we will be around anyway.

Bill and I carried rocks from a nearby defunct stone wall to secure the edges of the plastic. The plastic lies over the shelf that we made level with the pond outlet, and bends up to ground level. The rocks are placed along the shelf to keep the liner in place.

The plastic sticks up behind the rocks about 8 inches so that water can come part way up the rocks and hide the plastic. You can see some of the terracing here.
